After going to the Kings of Leon concert midweek, a concert which really triggered alot of thought about my magazine. A band that nowadays are iconic to so many, to see the crowd singing every word to every song, a crowd of over 10,000 people rocking to their favourite songs proved to me that a big band feature would be of huge interest. In terms of original photos I took a few however I have confidence in alternative pictures that I already own and I believe in my sister and some I have some idyllic prospective singers or members of bands.
For my own magazine I want to create a simplistic style and avoid any ambiguity that could be created in a more in depth and confusing appearance however the double page spread which I create needs to be detailed and therefore contain alot of information for my readership. If I am to create a magazine with a huge readership which are highly focussed and interested in already big names as well as up and coming names already circling around on high profile tours they will be keen to have maximum information and perhaps a more deeper look within an interview therefore I'm keen to avoid the normal questions or normal style so common in other magazines.
My current ideas for my front cover include having a large extra close up of my cover star which I could use my photogenic sister posing as a big country singer or a former popular star. I could create my sister as any of these things by using clever design, colour and editing to create a retro feel and again recognising my proposed audience.
Im enthusiastic about the use of retrospective and forgotten design just like fashion clothes designers recreate iconic design , my magazine needs and warrants an iconic unforgettable look. I plan to scatter the contents pages simply with a few polaroid pictures or even fish eye style images to propel the magazine from 'just a retro appearance' to a really unique and thriving community.
Other names I have since thought of since more or less naming my magazine 'live' are:
stereo - links in with the radio and retrospective listening to music, no links to mp3 or more modern listening.
library - library is a very modern term for your music collection, on a computer and portable format - a name like this would suggest it would be common amongst a newer audience and perhaps popular.
preview - preview is a name that suggests a tease or a glimpse of quality , something that my magazine needs to excel in.
the green room - this is probably my favourite name now for my magazine. the green rooms' dictionary meaning
" A green room is a room in a theater, studio, or other public venue for the accommodation of performers or speakers when not required on the stage" - this brand name would suggest a hidden knowledge or almost a name which carries unknown wanted information linking to a 'behind the scenes' feel; something always associated with the music scene and certainly always the dream of any music fan.
Another name i could use is 'backstage' which is the more explicit meaning of 'the green room'
Tomorrow I will analyse double page spreads, the effects of logo, and further investigation and ideas for my own magazine.
double page spreads, take photos, ideas
analysis of logos, look at other iconic logos, not mag related
my own ideas, potential images, outlining, fonts, slogans - look at slogans
why magazines are successful?
